Newborn program focus on
Aboriginal healthcare
The pioneering ‘Healthy Newborn Project’ run
by the University of South Australia improves
the training and delivery of ultrasound
services in remote communities.
The Hospital Research Foundation Group has
supported the program since 2018, and in 2023
announced a two-year extension with a fresh
$465,000 grant.
Dr Sam Heard OAM, Medical Director for the
Central Australian Aboriginal Congress, said
the program was extremely well received in his
catchment area.
Of particular focus in this next phase will be
Aboriginal healthcare workers, to enhance
culturally-appropriate antenatal care to
Aboriginal mums-to-be.
“The accolades for the ultrasound training
course haven’t stopped since. It was definitely
the best experience anyone has had in this area,”
Dr Heard said.
