COVID
World-first test for Long Covid
Thanks to you, patients struggling from
the long-term effects of Covid can trial the
world’s first diagnostic test for Long Covid.
Currently no single test exists to diagnose
Long Covid, however a landmark discovery
by SA researchers has identified a potential
biomarker for the condition.
The 33-year-old had been experiencing
persistent fatigue, brain fog, respiratory
issues, joint and muscle pain, insomnia, and
regular fainting episodes, but was repeatedly
told “this can’t be due to Covid”.
Now the research team, led by Associate
Professor Branka Grubor-Bauk (main picture)
with co-funding from The Hospital Research
Foundation Group, is running a trial to
validate the biomarker – raising hopes that a
diagnostic test might not be far away.
This groundbreaking work will help thousands
of people like Anita Kral (inset), who took two
years to get a Long Covid diagnosis.
