MENTAL HEALTH
THANKS TO YOUR DONATIONS,
you’re providing much-needed support and
research into the prevention, diagnosis and
treatment of mental health conditions.
Using tech to monitor
mental health
Tackling insomnia to
reduce depression
Wearable technology that monitors sleep,
physical activity and mental wellbeing
is being trialled as a lifesaving new tool
to help detect and prevent declines in
mental health.
About 90% of men with depression also
experience insomnia, increasing their risk
of future depression and relapse, and
reducing treatment.
Thanks to a grant from The Hospital
Research Foundation Group, University
of WA researcher Dr Michael Kyron will
trial the artificial intelligence (AI)
technology to improve the detection and
prevention of suicidal thoughts.
The project will combine the analysis
of the wearable technology’s data with
regular check-ins to identify those at risk
and provide timely support.
However, insomnia is often neglected in
depression management.
With support from The Hospital Research
Foundation Group, Dr Nicola Lovato from
Flinders University is trialling a new model
of care to help men with depression and
insomnia.
