AGEING
Stemming the bleed
New research is shedding light on
a common but poorly understood
neurological condition in older people
– with hopes of improving treatment and
reducing its recurrence.
Thanks to your kind donations, Adelaide
neurosurgeon Dr Adam Wells is leading a
study into chronic subdural haematoma – a
type of bleeding on the brain predominately
seen in older patients.
“Our project is looking at ways to further
characterise what makes up these
haematomas and how we can potentially
influence the body’s clotting mechanism to
try and reduce their recurrence and make
surgery safer,” Dr Wells said.
With the western world’s ageing population
and the wider implications haematoma
has on people having to undergo multiple
surgeries, these findings could be
groundbreaking for healthcare globally.
