AGEING WELL
New life-changing projects to ‘age well’
Thanks to your support, The Hospital Research
Foundation Group was able to commit
$994,000 to six new ageing projects in 2023.
The projects covered topics such as improving
the management of Type 2 diabetes and
osteoarthritis, helping delirium patients recover,
and using Judo to reduce older people’s risk
of injury from a fall.
Professor Hannah Keage (inset) is leading
one of the projects, focused on rehabilitative
intervention after delerium.
We look forward to keeping you updated!
Improving recovery
from hip fractures
A new staff education program for aged
care facilities is improving residents’
recovery after a hip fracture.
The first 48 hours after an aged care
resident’s return from hospital after hip
surgery are most critical, yet there is often
little guidance or handover provided about
what their care should look like.
The new program aims to better educate
staff on best-practice rehabilitation, driven
by rehabilitation physician Professor Maria
Crotty (right) and nurse Aimee Cayzer.
The program covers early mobility, pain
management, diet and nutrition, and
secondary fracture prevention.
The model has been well-received so far, and
can also be applied to wrist and arm fractures!
